Summer mountain leader course
I completed the summer winter mountain leader course in June 2021 with Abacus mountain guides.
The course was over 5 days with a night on expedition.
Day 1- We went through equipment for us as mountain guides and equipment that we
should bring for our clients. We then went out to do some mico navigating and pacing.
Day 2- We discussed leadership styles, demonstrating flexible leadership, making sound
judgement, demonstrating good practice with regards to individual skills, making suitable
route choices and identifying and managing risks.
Day 3- We went onto the hill and practiced emergency rope work. Anchor selection and
making sure the are ‘bomb proof’. We went through the appropriate knots and methods of
belaying.
Day 4- We went through dealing with emergencies and rescues. We talked about mountain
rescue services, water hazards and steam crossings.
Day 5- Expedition was about navigation, leadership, the environment and camp craft. We
got up through the night to do some night navigation.
It was a brilliant course, and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the support from
Neil Mackenzie Trust. Thank you all so much.
